I stumbled across this photography news site called TWIPPhoto.com. It’s got some really neat articles and writeups - reviews of books and new equipments. The content is well written. Check it out. (I think TWIP means “This Week In Photography”.)
You can follow TWIPPhoto on Twitter too.

The team at Snapact knows that not everyone wants to become a pro photographer. Many people just want to take decent pictures of their friends and family in order to share in various ways - taking the next National Geographic cover photo doesn’t even enter their minds. Nor should it!
That said, I couldn’t help but to post a link to an article on Smashing Magazine by Trey Ratcliff about improving your skills from intermediate to advanced. There is a lot of good information in there for photographers of all levels. I’d recommend going over to take a look at the photos at least - they are fantastic HDRs!

It’s been a while since I’ve given an update about our progress on the Snapact website overhaul, so… here we go:
- Basic layout changes are done. The view will be wider, focusing more on 1024-width displays compared to the current 800-width displays. This means more screen “real estate” to show off your photos.
- User feed notifications are reimplemented to be more flexible - you won’t notice a difference too much, in theory, but now…
- … Community feed notifications are done. This is new. You will now be able to see, on one page, what your friends/connections have been up to on Snapact.
- Increase in upload speeds from the Snapact Photo Manager to the Snapact Photo Sharing Community! This is a big one.
- A more visible use of photo tags (in a proper multi-sized ‘cloud’ format). Community pages will expose community-wide tags and profile pages will show user-specific photo tags (if any). This is a good way to get your photos noticed - if that’s your thing.
- Importing contacts. You will be able to add your contacts from popular online email services to Snapact. Once imported…
- … You can easily share your photos, albums and profile with your Snapact contacts (your friends and family) - even if they’re not Snapact users themselves. Of course, it might be nice if they started using Snapact too!
There are more details, but that should be enough to whet people’s appetites. We’re looking to start our formal (internal) testing by the end of February, so that means within a few weeks, it will be live for all to use!
Once released, you’ll be seeing many new additions over time that enable you to do what you want with your photos - most being suggested by users like you. Making it easy to add new functionality to the Snapact Photo Sharing Community is the biggest reason for the architecture switch.
Final note: you can follow Snapact on Twitter, don’t forget!

Once again, the Kim Komando show has delivered some web traffic/link love to Snapact. As before (see here and here for more previous info), Snapact has experienced a relatively big spike in traffic, which is continuing as I type this. This time, however, we aren’t having download issues - I believe this means that we learned from our previous experiences…
Thank you once again for the repeat performance - and thank you to all the users who downloaded Snapact! If you haven’t already done so, sign up for a free photo sharing account on Snapact!

Don’t worry, this isn’t going to be a political piece - we believe strongly that each person is allowed to have their own beliefs in politics, religion, etc. It’s simply a statement of amazement regarding what David Bergman has achieved (photographically speaking) on Barack Obama’s Inauguration Day: a 1474 mega-pixel stitched photograph of the area during Obama’s speech.
Amazing work, David!

Wow - it’s been a long time since there has been a new posting on the Snapact blog. With the holiday season and then jumping right back into website and application development, we’ve all been very busy. The new website implementation is coming along very well - it’s going to rock. It will make it far easier to implement new features and integrate with other websites.
The new website layout will feature a wider layout, with more intuitive navigation - it will be far more community oriented as well, meaning it will be easier to interact with other users, explore other photos, ask questions, get feedback and more. If you’re into digital photography, Snapact will help you learn how to shoot better. If you’re simply into sharing photos with family and friends, Snapact will give your photo sharing a shot of adrenaline. We can’t wait.
It’s a little earlier to start talking about timeframes, unfortunately. There are still a few unknowns - but it’s coming, and it will be big.
Oh, a couple of weeks ago, we started tweeting on Twitter here http://twitter.com/snapact. Follow us!

It’s been a while since there’s been a posting here on the Snapact blog - you might think it’s because we don’t care… but nothing could be further from the truth! We care so much, that we’re doing a website rewrite to enable us to more easily add new functionality in the future. A big part of the consideration for version 2.0 of the Snapact Photo Sharing Community website includes theme support - if you don’t like the current dark theme, well, we’d like to offer you some choice in that. (We didn’t actually think of this ourselves - you, our users have requested it! We simply listen.)
Anyhow, theming is only a small part of what we have in store for the Snapact website. We’re excited to roll out the new version… we just can’t say when that will be just yet, however. There’s still a fair amount of work to be done - we’re on it!
On a bit of a different note, we learned a lot from the spike in traffic about 3 weeks ago from the Kim Komando radio show website. Again, we’re very grateful for the publicity! We were able to improve some of the pages on the Snapact Photo Sharing Community website. In order to make website improvements, it’s necessary to have a decent sampling of traffic behaviour to draw some conclusions from.
We have a small percentage of users running at a 800×600 PC screen resolution - enough that we’re going to stick with it for now as a bare minimum. That said, we’ve been discussing themes on the Snapact website (color, layout, etc.) and page width is a part of that discussion - if we support a user-selectable theme, you might just have the option to go with a wider view… Anything is possible!
Lastly, the top ten countries showing interest (rolling over the past month) in Snapact are as follows:
- United States
- Italy
- Canada
- France
- Germany
- Brazil
- China
- Japan
- India
- United Kingdom
Thank you everyone for your support!

Due to yesterday’s posting on an American radio show’s website, we had a massive increase in traffic coming to the Snapact Photo Sharing website. I monitored the situation over the course of the day and was pretty pleased with the outcome. We had a 4722% increase in unique traffic from the day before!
While we realize the nature of such traffic - that it will spike up, then sadly fall - we appreciate it none the less. It helps to test our systems and infrastructure. It re-ignites our passion for what we’re doing. It is also GREAT exposure to new users!
We did actually notice an issue with the Snapact Photo Manager download yesterday - it wasn’t noticed until late in the day, unfortunately. We were re-directing our download traffic to Download.com for a variety of reasons - but at some point the Download.com server sort of de-listed the Snapact download. When this situation was noticed, we moved our download to a working server, but we have to wonder how many people were not able to get their hands on the Snapact Photo Manager…
If you know of someone who would enjoy Snapact, we wouldn’t object if you told them about us and what we do.
Thanks everyone!

The Kim Komando Show has put us up as “Download of the Day“!
This is a great bit of publicity that has caused a traffic spike on our website - thank you Kim Komando!

I took a couple of hours off from Snapact today to attend the Remembrance Day memorial services at the Victoria, BC legislature buildings. While there were some excellent photo opportunities, I was glad to have just stood with other Victoria-area strangers in remembrance of how we got to where we are today - and particularly who helped us achieve it.
Thank you.
